Teacher Comment on Progress
Congratulations Kacie on your performance in Rock of Ages. Throughout the production process you demonstrated a very high level of professionalism and understanding of your role within the production.
Your enthusiasm, energy and sustained hard work in Rock of Ages clearly demonstrates that you can perform dances with very well-developed awareness of rhythm and time structures and the ability to respond to the variety of musical numbers with a highly developed sense of musicality. Your detailed Blog shows a mature ability to identify the key terms relating to the physical skills and the style. You fully understand the meaning of these terms and always respond effectively to them. In the final performances of Rock of Ages you applied the variety of stylistic qualities needed for each musical number with extremely highly developed and accurate technique and an exciting dynamic range. You consistently applied correct technique in placement and positions across the range of musical numbers in performance demonstrating your versatility as a dancer. You fully understood the intention and emotion of each musical number and conveyed this in an engaging way through your detailed attention to facial and physical embodiment of the dance idea and characterisation. Your Blog is extremely detailed, consistently well maintained and provides excellent evidence of your ability to analyse and understand your progress in physical and stylistic skills throughout the process of rehearsing and performing.
I particularly liked your physical characterisation of Justice - oozing sassiness and maturity. This contrasted so well with the wild energy of your other roles and ‘Rocktastic’ movement.
You consistently demonstrated a professional, reliable attitude throughout the rehearsal process and were a pleasure to work with. Keep up the good work.
Teacher Feedback for Solo Dance Performance:
'Kacie, You prepared extremely well for your solo in a musical theatre style – America from West Side Story. You gave a confident, polished and energised performance.
Physical skills. Your solo demanded high levels of stamina and coordination, which you executed extremely well. You demonstrated effective balance throughout, especially on the kicks and turns. I liked the way you travelled and covered a range of stage space. You could further develop your flexibility to enable you to get more extension, especially in the leg kicks.
Performance skill: your confidence and good preparation allowed you to perform in a highly expressive way, lots of effective facial expression and high energy which conveyed the sassy quality of the character.
Music dance relationship. You understood the musical phrasing and Latin American rhythms extremely well, enabling your rhythmic footwork to relate exactly to the counts and phrasing. I also like the way you were able to hold powerful stillness for the correct duration of the rhythmic accompaniment.'
Targets To Help Improve
- My first target is to help improve my flexibility, specifically aiming to develop my flexibility so I am able to get more extension in my leg kicks. To help improve this, I can do regular stretches that specifically focus on improving flexibility for high kicks. I can do these stretches regularly so that overtime I can see an improvement in this skill. An example of a stretch I can do is a standing hamstring. Stretching the hamstrings can improve flexibility for high kicks.
- My second target is to improve/work on my posture and alignment more. I noticed that when I do leg kicks, I tend to bend/curve my back in order to get my leg higher. By doing this, I am throwing my posture off and becoming unaligned. I need to have good posture and remain upright and engage my core strength. I can do exercises that focus on posture and alignment but also my core strength. An exercise I can do to improve my posture and alignment is 'Child's Pose' and it stretches and lengthens your spine, glutes, and hamstring and releases tension in your lower back and neck. I can do this stretch as a part of my warmup before I dance or have a dance lesson. An exercise I can do to help improve my core strength is a simple plank. Like with the posture and alignment exercise, I can also do a plank as a part of my warmup before I dance or have a dance lesson. To increase it's difficulty, I can challenge myself to gradually hold the plank for a longer amount of time.
