Contemporary Dance Performance and Reflection

Film of Performance

Reflection of Physical & Interpretive Skills
  • Our weakness in previous rehearsals was our group synchronisation but I would say we have made improvements. When I watched back the video, I could see that during the dance break we are much more in sync with one another compared to the last time we filmed the dance. I think we could still improve in our synchronisation but with more practice in this section I think it will improve even more. Another weakness, particularly in the dance break, was our group timing but I think we have also improved our timing too. We recognised that timing was a weakness in our previous rehearsal so we made sure to focus on our timing before this lesson. Our practice led to an improvement in our timing as we broke the section down to make sure we were doing dance moves at the right count. Another one of our weaknesses was with the group lift. We still weren't confident with it so decided to cut the lift from the dance. I have tried to work on my flexibility as it was one of my personal weaknesses but I would say I still need to work on it as it still needs improvement.
  • Our group target was to add an element of improvisation as our dance was lacking that and it is a key element to the contemporary style. We decided to add improvisation at the end of the dance before we get back into the clump to finish the dance.
3 Targets for Improvement
  1.  Synchronisation: We need to improve our synchronisation, as a group, as there are certain points in the video where we are meant to be dancing certain movements at the same time as one another but we haven't quite achieved that yet. It is mainly evident in the dance break section of the song. We can improve this by breaking down the sections of the song/dance and focus on each count of 8. By focusing on each count of 8 we can really look into detail of exactly when everyone needs to hit the same movement in the choreography in relation to the music.
  2. Flexibility (personal): I need to personally improve my flexibility. In the dance there are moments where there are high kicks and a fan kick. When I watch the video back, I felt that my leg wasn't able to go very high as I am not that flexible. I can improve my flexibility by doing frequent exercises that focus on improving your flexibility. I can also make sure I stretch before dancing so my body is as loose as it can be.
  3. Improvisation: By adding improvisation to our dance it makes our dance have more techniques/elements from the contemporary style. I think it creates a good ending to our dance but I think it does look slightly messy. I think we could improve our improvisation by making our spacing and positioning in a neater formation and by giving each other certain movements to improvise with so that no one is doing anything similar and to make the improvisation neater and more like organised improvisation. We are still improving but with a brainstorm we can have more of a plan of what we are going to do.
